MEMBERS EXPRESS DISMAY OVER THE SNATCHING OF MACE FROM SENATE CHAMBERS BY ARMED THUGS
Members of the Federal House of Representatives on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 stood down legislative session for 30 minutes and proceeded in a delegation led by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Lasun on a solidarity visit to their colleagues in the Senate chambers who, while in session experienced an attack by a gang of armed bandits who carted away with the legislative mace.

While in the Senate chamber, the Deputy Speaker assured the entire Senate that the 8th National Assembly is more than determined to see the nation’s democracy survive; he aligned with the leadership of the Senate to issue a matching order to the Inspector General of Police alongside the Director of State Security to recover the snatched mace within 24 hours.

Earlier in the House, the Majority leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila raised a motion of urgent public importance on the matter, describing the nefarious act as being premeditated and connotes an assault on the legislature which is the symbol of any democracy. While decrying the porous nature of the security structure of the National Assembly, he stated that this sort of anomaly has not been recorded in the history of the nation.

The Majority leader added that if these terrorist could easily storm into the Senate chambers in session and successfully executed their plan, then nobody is safe within the Assembly complex. He also queried the National Assembly administration for inadvertently allowing the legislative precinct to be turned into a sort of commercial centre, where they could not account for the number of people going in and out.

Consequently, the House has resolved to overhaul the entire security structure of the National Assembly as well as set up a Committee to investigate the circumstance surrounding the hostile invasion of the Nigeria Senate and the snatching of Mace by armed thugs.
