SENATE RECEIVES TWO LETTERS FROM THE PRESIDENCY, ADJOURNS SESSION IN HONOUR OF LATE HOUSE MEMBER
The Senate resumed plenary session on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 after a three week break in order to allow various Standing Committees of the Chamber engage Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) on the defence of their 2017 budget estimates. The sitting was presided over by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
Sen. Saraki acknowledged the receipt of two letters from the President during of the break and read the Executive Communication before the Chamber. They include:
1) The Extension of President Muhammadu Buhari’s vocational leave on medical ground. The President sought to extend his vacation in London based on doctors’ advice.
2) The forwarding of the name of Justice Walter Onoghen for screening and confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). This is the second time the Acting CJN’s name is presented to the Upper Legislative Chamber for confirmation.  The letter was sent to the Senate by the Acting President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
Meanwhile, the Red Chamber has adjourned today’s sitting in honour of late House of Representatives member, Hon. Bello Sani who died on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the age of 51 and left behind a wife and children. The law-maker represented Mashi/Dutsi Federal Constituency of Katsina State in the Green Chamber from 2011 to 2017.
Accordingly: 
• A minute silence was observed in honour of the deceased by the Chamber.
• The Senate expressed its heartfelt condolences to his family, people and government of Katsina State.
Thereafter, the Chamber deferred all items on the day’s order paper and adjourned sitting to another legislative date.
