HOUSE REVIEWS OPTIONS TO GET NIGERIA OUT OF ECONOMIC RECESSION
The House of Representatives has reassured Nigerians that it would explore possible options, including fast tracking legislation, which would assist the Federal Government in its efforts to ensure that the present economic recession hampering the nation's economy is short-term. The assurance came in a welcome address of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 as the Federal Lawmakers reconvened after its annual recess which lasted for 8 weeks. The Speaker said the House aligns itself with the sufferings and challenges of the masses owing to the economic recession which has in no small measure impacted and made life extremely difficult.
He added that the nation is in a historical stage that requires all hands to be on deck despite the differences in our ethnic, religious and political affiliations. While cautioning that the period does not call for blame games, Hon. Dogara implored the legislators as the Representatives of the people to play active leadership role through closer ties and engagement with their constituents. He charged them to radiate hope to the already despaired and despondent citizens. Adding that the economic team of the Federal Government is already engaging experts and critical financial stakeholders to get the best ideas and means to get us out of recession as soon as possible.
It was on the heels of this economic situation that the House commenced a debate during which majority of the Lawmakers called for economic policies to help bring the nation out of recession. They demanded the President Muhammadu Buhari, to amongst other things summon a joint session of the National Assembly and use the platform to brief the nation on the state of the nation's economy.
Meanwhile it was a rowdy session at the first real sitting of the House on resumption, following a motion moved by Hon. Emmanuel Okey-Jev calling for the suspension of the ex-Appropriation Committee Chairman, Hon. Abdulmumin Jubrin over allegations of budget padding against the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dogara. The motion had stirred up a mixed reaction and compelled the Presiding Officer during the session to refer the matter to the Ethics and Privilege Committee. The Committee is to investigate the
